Sussex Tipi Holidays

“You have such lovely surroundings for your tipis. You have made them wonderfully cosy and it is great to just turn up with your sleeping bag and have everything else provided”

“We have had many a magical evening sat around the fire looking at the stars and listening to the owls and spotting the odd bat or two. I always looked forward to going to bed a bit early just so we could be in the tipi.”

Marketing & tourism in East Sussex
You only need to visit East Sussex once and mooch around on one of the fabulous beaches or go for an invigorating walk in the hundreds of miles of unspoilt countryside to understand the core appeal of the region. It’s good that this is the case, as there are thousands of businesses dotted along the South Coast that are reliant upon tourism.

The problem however is that we’re all living on an island! - and as a result the formula for attracting tourism remains pretty much the same and is repeated time and time again all around the country ... and let’s face it, on this small island there are in fact places that do have far sandier beaches and more dramatic countryside than East Sussex ... So what should be our unique formula in attracting tourism to our seaside towns?

How to differentiate East Sussex from the rest?
The key strategies to promoting tourism in East Sussex are to focus on the two greatest assets of the region: 1) our proximity to one of the greatest tourist attractions in the UK — London. 2) find, support and promote the eccentricities of our region.

The first tourism strategy for East Sussex
The first strategy is a no-brainer as visitors to London can also get to East Sussex in just over an hour by train – in other words they can both experience the great metropolis of London and within the same week or fortnight’s holiday also effortlessly spend time in truly beautiful British countryside whilst at the same time enjoy a visit to the seaside – quite an itinerary – London / Countryside / Seaside ... and all without too much effort!

The second tourism strategy for East Sussex
The second strategy is to seek out and promote the myriad of unusual, eccentric and downright wacky things that go on in East Sussex. As a simple example, the month-long spectacular series of bonfire nights that begin town by town in October and continue right through to the big November 5th event are almost a regional secret – if you have not had previous experience of East Sussex, you’re not likely to know that some of the singularly best bonfire and fireworks nights can be found in the seaside town of Hastings and the countryside of Firle ... culminating in the grand finalé in Lewes.

There are other obvious, eccentric and potentially major tourist attractions that should warrant wider acclaim and patronage – but there are also all those hundreds and hundreds of B&Bs, unusual hotels, and attractions and experiences that are unique to our region — and we met one recently.

Sussex Tipi Holidays
Sussex Tipis are now in their fourth successful year and have had some great reviews in the Brighton Argus, Ethical Living and in Cool Camping 2008. Set on a tranquil 10-acre family friendly site including a small woodland, vines and orchards, this is an area of outstanding natural beauty. It is also approximately 8 miles from historic Rye and the traditional seaside resorts of Hastings & St. Leonards-on-Sea.

They offer anyone looking for a break from the hum, buzz and din of 21st century life, the opportunity to spend a bit of time living in a genuine American tipi to experience a taste of North American nomadic culture deep in the heart of rural East Sussex.

Now we think that this is a particularly good example of the quite quirky and wonderfully eccentric tourist attractions that East Sussex has to offer – and we’d bet a few pounds of fish that there are many, many other so-far-secret attractions just waiting for the opportunity to tell everyone just how good they are.
