This concept design for a 120m high vertical axis offshore wind turbine could, within the next decade, change our preconception of a wind turbine.
Behaving more like a giant rotary washing line, this beautiful 21st Century solution to improving the efficiency, durability, installation and maintenance costs of offshore wind turbines is the inevitable result of a design revolution driven by the mother of all invention, “Necessity”.
You can find articles on the internet for this particular concept design dated 2005, and the vertical axis Darrius rotor (which looks like a giant egg whisk) has been around since 1931 ... but everything has it’s time, and with a “one third stake” in the £20 million or so of Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) design funding, the NOVA Offshore Aerogenerator, which was originally included in Grimshaw's architectural proposal for the redevelopment of Las Palmas in Tenerife, has a good chance of finding its true role and value in helping the UK government meet its target of 15% of our energy needs being delivered by renewable sources by 2020 ... go NOVA! | Top |
