Snow, snow and more snow in St. Leonards-on-Sea and what folly it inspires. From the blue-grey skies that have cast the sea in steel, an insistent flurry of snowflakes tumble to the ground turning our town into a playground, now laying down the carpet of forgotten youth.

Commuters are stopped in their tracks and skip back home — schools are shut and weary parents start to brighten as they dust off the sledges &mdash shops and businesses announce their closure with scrap-paper notices belying their delight as this small shard of joy overrides the everyday forecast of a deepening recession.

To hell with the dollar and the weakening pound, as snow ogres are built on the beach and snowballs fly from every corner as men in suits duck and dive … their breath forming speech bubbles of laughter in the cold winter air.

We’re all out to play and it’s good for the soul … even the dour statue of Queen Victoria in Warrior Square looks suitably amused in her new white-crystal cape and fetching bobble hat … and so she should, as here today, and just for a change, we have a happy town that is deep and crisp and even—beautiful. | Top |
