Construction on Hastings Pier started on 18th December 1869. It was opened by the Earl of Granville, Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports on Monday, 5th August 1872.

Designed by the famous engineer Eugenius Birch, at a cost of £23,250, the original pier was modelled on Brighton West Pier.

Unlike Brighton, however, a very handsome oriental style pavilion, capable of seating 2000 people comfortably, was constructed at the seaward end.

On the approach to the pavilion, a flight of steps either side of the building led down to the landing stages.

St Leonards pier opened on 28th October 1891. It had a 600-700 seat pavilion and steamer landing stage.

The pier closed at the outbreak of WW2, and it was sectioned in 1940, and later damaged by a bomb and a fire.

If you are heading over to Hastings & St. Leonards-on-Sea for a few days and need a place to stay, look no further than Hastings House boutique bed and breakfast hotel.

We’ve recently been working with Seng & Elisabeth Loy of Hastings House to present their fabulous hotel on-line. Our initial research shows that Hastings House in Warrior Square has a historical record as a guest house going back all the way to 1855, and it was around this time in history that St. Leonards was one of the most fashionable seaside destinations on the South Coast.

Seng & Elisabeth have embraced that historical position by once again creating a fashionable and beautiful hotel in St. Leonards-on-Sea ... and Hastings House hotel is very special, mixing eclectic contemporary design with luxurious comfort, all wrapped up in the warmth of Seng & Elisabeth's welcome and hospitality.

History also shows us that although the annual seaside holiday remained a common experience in Britain throughout the 1950s and 1960s, as “package holidays” to “Torremolinos” became accessible to all in the 70’s and 80’s, the societal attitude to holidaying in the UK changed—this heralded the beginning of a decline for many of the UK’s seaside towns.

Things have changed ... and continue to change for the better
A new regenerative governmental policy is now in place and along with the entrepreneurial endeavours of people like Seng & Elisabeth and other like-minded proprietors, (shop keepers and more general business owners), towns like Hastings & St. Leonards are reinventing themselves and once again attracting the more “interesting” visitor to explore the history and hidden jewels of our seaside towns.

Comment by Seng Loy:

“We took a leap of faith in choosing to create a beautiful hotel/B&B in St. Leonards and we are now fully confident that our investment was not only a wise one but that it will also go a long way in contributing to regeneration of the area.”

“We would like to thank “Fuga” for their expert advice and continuing support of our business … and we would especially like to thank Diana (of Fuga) for her beautiful photographs—Oh—and the copywriting etc.”
