American Teenagers, Farting Cows & Climate Change
What is a Stakeholder?
Stakeholders are the people that are influenced by what you do and how you operate.
They also have a direct impact on your business or organisation: they could be loyal customers, evangelistic about your good work or products—or they could be disaffected customers that take their business elsewhere whilst publicly lambasting you.
Stakeholders can also be your staff, suppliers, financiers, shareholders or the general public … all of which have a direct impact on your organisation or business that is entirely dependent on their perception or experience of who and what you are.

The Plastiki Adventure
If you found yourself agreeing with the principal of “engagement” but were ultimately unmoved, and not ready to explore the ramifications of “engagement” with your organisation or business … take a few minutes to watch the video above—then read the short articles below … as it may trigger a few new ideas on how to connect with your particular audience.
Plastic Munching Microbes
The curiosity of a 16-year-old Canadian student became engaged in the Plastic Pollution Problem … he (Daniel Burd) decided to find out just what was being done about the plastic problem. The answer was not much. So he decided to do something himself.
He knew that plastic does eventually degrade and figured micro organisms must be behind it—and his goal was to isolate the micro organisms that can break down plastic. Burd (the 16-year-old) with support from his teacher Mark Menhennet, spent months cultivating the microbes that eventually degrade plastic into stronger and more efficient strains …
The result: Burd achieved a 43% degradation of his plastic samples within six weeks!—to put that in perspective, previously full degradation of plastic was assumed to occur within about 1000 years!
High school girl discovers styrofoam-eating bacterium
A very curious 16-year-old high school student (this time from Taiwan) Tseng I-Ching swept the recent world's largest science fair (Intel International Science & Engineering Fair) for her discovery of a polystyrene-decomposing bacterium derived from mealworm beetles.
I-Ching vivisected over 500 mealworm beetles to isolate the single bacterium that allows the mealworm to digest one of the most troublesome forms of waste on the planet—styrofoam.
For her discovery, I-Ching was awarded the top prize in the Microbiology category.
The girl, nicknamed “Frog,” stated that her main career objective is to become a microbiologist and “save the world.”
I for one believe her — and I also know that among the audience (in the above video) is an American teenager laughing at farting-cows — I also know that this teenager is now curious enough to do a little research into these farting-cows and the effects of methane on the Planet … and what I’m hoping is that he or she will be “engaged” enough to explore specific issues of climate change, just like Daniel Burd and Tseng I-Ching, and maybe discover another potential solution. | Top |
